In 2020, diaTribe hosted the d20 Lightning Talks – where five leaders in the field explored the impact of diabetes stigma and what we can do to end it.

Anthony Anderson, star of the hit ABC sitcom, black-ish, shared his experience with type 2 diabetes and illuminated why it’s important to raise awareness to combat stigma.

We heard from a renowned expert on obesity stigma, Rebecca Puhl, who explored the impacts of disease stigma and what can be done to address it.

The CEO of the FrameWorks Institute, Nat Kendall-Taylor, introduced us to the science of changing public perceptions through narrative creation.

Joan Garry, former executive director of GLAAD, shared, in a powerful talk, GLAAD’s strategy for tackling LGBTQ stigma which transformed the lives of Americans.

And finally, we heard from diabetes physician, researcher, and former President of the American Diabetes Association, Dr. James Gavin III, who gave us the physician’s perspective on the stigma and discrimination that people with diabetes face.
